NFPA World Fire Safety Congress & Exposition Minneapolis, MN Monday, May 20, 2002 "Use the power you have" Once Mr. Miller completed his farewell speech, keynote speaker Bernard Kerik, former police commissioner of New York City, took the stage to discuss his recollections of the events of September 11th. "I've never felt so helpless as I watched the buildings burn and people jumping," said Mr. Kerik. "If there's one message I want you to take home, it would be: never forget September 11th. We've forgotten in the past and as Americans, we tend to deny evil until it's too late." Mr. Kerik advocated increased intelligence and defense spending to protect the country. "We must send a message to terrorists: we are coming and we are not stopping until you leave this country alone. You are a major part of fighting this war. Use the power you have. Tell your legislators that they cannot forget. If we don't fight for our freedom we may never get it back."
